Alfred Victor René (Duke) Breland
Private Alfred Victor René "Duke" Breland (H-52124) was a Métis World War II Veteran born on November 4, 1918, in Headingley (St. François Xavier), Manitoba. He enlisted in the Canadian Army (Active) in Winnipeg on July 26, 1940, serving overseas across multiple theaters including Britain, the Central Mediterranean Area, and Northwest Europe. Following five years of military service, Private Breland received an honorable discharge in Winnipeg on October 24, 1945. Returning home to Manitoba, he married Marie Cécile Welsh on February 24, 1949, and built his life in Poplarfield. He passed away at Percy E. Moore Hospital in Hodgson on December 16, 2003, at the age of 85. He was commemorated through the Métis Veterans Legacy Program with a Recognition Payment presented to his surviving spouse, Cécile Breland, on January 28, 2021.
