Woodridge Veterans Monument
Project Background & Objectives The Woodridge Veterans Monument was created to preserve and celebrate Métis history, culture, and achievements in a single, permanent location. Developed during Woodridge’s 125th anniversary year, the project aims to establish a prominent archive honouring 54 Métis Veterans, three nationally recognized Métis musicians, and the broader Métis contribution to the founding and development of the community. By combining multiple commemorative and educational elements in one site, the project seeks to create a richer and more meaningful visitor experience.

Developed during Woodridge’s 125th anniversary year, the project aims to establish a prominent archive honouring 54 Métis Veterans, three nationally recognized Métis musicians, and the broader Métis contribution to the founding and development of the community. The monument will feature a Veterans Memorial, a musicians’ monument, six interpretive pedestals highlighting local Métis history, and flags representing identity and pride. Located in M.A. Querel Park, the project is intended to serve as a lasting place of remembrance, education, and community pride.
Milestones & Progress
The project was planned to run from May 2025 to December 2026. Early work focused on site preparation, including design layout, tree removal, grading, soil preparation, and landscaping activities, supported by volunteer labour in kind contributions. Site rough in work was scheduled between May 15 and May 31, 2025.
Subsequent phases included final grading and access construction, followed by concrete installation, walkways, benches, barriers, and fabrication of the Veterans Memorial. The project secured cost estimates from Métis owned contractors, obtained community support, and advanced required permits and design plans. The applicant also committed to prioritizing Métis employees, artists, and subcontractors throughout implementation.
Final Impacts & Achievements
The project is expected to create Woodridge’s first permanent archive dedicated to Métis Veterans and local Métis history. Through its memorials, interpretive displays, and historical storytelling, it will preserve important community histories while increasing public awareness of Métis contributions to the region.
The completed monument will provide a lasting legacy for the community by honouring Veterans and Métis achievements, fostering community pride, and creating a welcoming place for remembrance, learning, and reflection. The project aims to ensure that Métis stories remain visible and accessible for future generations.
