Métis Veteran Commemorative Wall (Fort Ellice)
Project Background & Objectives The Fort Ellice Local Community Hall Commemorative Wall Project was created to honour Métis Veterans and preserve their stories within a permanent display at the newly acquired Fort Ellice Local Community Hall in St. Lazare, Manitoba. The project aimed to create a dedicated space featuring framed photographs, engraved plaques, and service information that recognizes the contributions and sacrifices of Métis Veterans while fostering community pride and cultural awareness. In addition to the commemorative wall, the project included painting and upgrading the hall to create a welcoming gathering place that reflects Métis heritage and provides a space for community events, celebrations, and learning. The initiative was intended as the first step in a long-term plan to continue expanding recognition of local Métis Veterans and history.

Plans included hiring a Métis summer student to assist with research, painting, and artwork creation, while local Métis members would complete construction and beautification work throughout the hall. The project also involved preparing a large, framed display area on the stage and planning a community celebration to unveil the completed space.
Final Impacts & Achievements
The project created a lasting tribute to Métis Veterans through a permanent commemorative display that preserves their names, stories, and service for future generations. The wall provides an opportunity for community members and visitors to learn about and reflect on the contributions of Métis Veterans.
The hall improvements also strengthened the Fort Ellice Local Community Hall as a community gathering place that celebrates Métis culture, history, and identity.
