Métis Beaded Poppy Workshop

Project Background & Objectives 

The WWII Métis Veterans Commemoration Workshop was created to honour the contributions and sacrifices of WWII Métis Veterans by sharing their history and highlighting the significance of Métis beaded poppy as a symbol of remembrance. The project aimed to engage 100 Métis Citizens through free workshops that combined historical education with cultural learning, helping participants gain a deeper understanding of Métis military service and beadwork traditions.  

Milestones & Progress 

The project was delivered through a series of monthly workshops held between December 2022 and November 2023. Participants received Métis Beaded Poppy Kits, historical workbooks, and instruction from Métis beaders. A key milestone was the development of the workshop workbook in collaboration with the Métis Veteran Memorial Book Collection Project, ensuring participants received accurate and meaningful historical information. In total, 12 workshops were successfully facilitated throughout the project. 

Final Impacts & Achievements  

The project successfully met its objectives by providing both educational and cultural learning opportunities for Métis Citizens. More than 100 participants attended the workshops, and all 100 bead kits were distributed. Through the creation of commemorative beaded poppies, participants gained a greater appreciation for the legacy of WWII Métis Veterans and the cultural significance of Métis beadwork. This project helped preserve and share Métis history, honoured veterans through meaningful acts of remembrance, and strengthened community connection to Métis culture and heritage.
