Honouring Our RRM Veterans - Turtle Mountain

Project Background & Objectives 

The Honouring Our RRM Veterans – Turtle Mountain project was created to honour Métis Veterans through the construction of a permanent memorial featuring an infinity shaped concrete walkway, flower beds, park benches, an engraved granite memorial slab, and two Métis infinity flags. The project aimed to create a lasting place of remembrance, education, and reflection for Métis citizens, youth and the broader community. 

The memorial was also intended to host commemorative events such as Indigenous Veterans Day, while providing a safe and meaningful space to recognize the service and sacrifices of past and present Métis Veterans. Community support included volunteer labour from local Métis residents and contributions from the project's general contractor. 

Milestones & Progress 

The project was planned in phases, beginning with site excavation and preparation, followed by forming and reinforcing the infinity shaped walkway, bench pads, and plaque foundation, and flagpole bases. Concrete placement, finishing, and construction of bench and plaque supports were also included in the work plan.  

The final phase involved installing benches, flag poles, and the commemorative plaque, with community led landscaping activities providing flower beds, shrubs, and other site enhancements through in-kind contributions. 

Final Impacts & Achievements 

The project's intended outcome was a permanent memorial that honours Métis Veterans and preserves their legacy for future generations. Through its commemorative design and Métis cultural symbolism, the site was expected to serve as both a place of remembrance and an educational resource. 

The completed memorial would provide a dedicated gathering place for ceremonies, learning, and reflection while increasing awareness of Métis military contributions and strengthening community pride for years to come.
