HKVCA 80th Anniversary Commemoration - Legacy of Remembrance
Project Background & Objectives The Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association (HKVCA) created this project to host a three-day event in Ottawa marking the 80th Anniversary of Victory over Japan Day and honouring Canadians who served in the Battle of Hong Kong. A key objective was to recognize more than 100 identified Red River Métis veterans and ensure Métis history, culture, and military contributions were incorporated throughout the event.

The Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association (HKVCA) created this project to host a three-day event in Ottawa marking the 80th Anniversary of Victory over Japan Day and honouring Canadians who served in the Battle of Hong Kong. A key objective was to recognize more than 100 identified Red River Métis veterans and ensure Métis history, culture, and military contributions were incorporated throughout the event.
The project aimed to provide educational sessions on Indigenous military service, particularly the experiences of the regiments sent to Hong Kong, while also showcasing Métis culture through activities such as beading, storytelling, jigging, and fiddling. The event also sought to help Métis veterans’ families attend through financial assistance and create opportunities for remembrance, learning, and community connection.
Milestones & Progress
Planning for the event began in October 2023, with a 12-member volunteer committee meeting regularly and contributing an estimated 4,560 volunteer hours toward organizing the anniversary commemoration.
Key planning activities included identifying more than 100 Red River Métis members of the Winnipeg Grenadiers, developing workshops and presentations on Indigenous military history and Métis culture, and securing Métis presenters, cultural performers, and family participation supports. Veterans Affairs Canada committed resources for commemorative activities, while additional partners supported attendance by Indigenous families.
Final Impacts & Achievements
The event increased awareness of the contributions and sacrifices of Red River Métis and other Indigenous veterans who served during the Battle of Hong Kong. Through workshops, presentations, and cultural programming, participants gained a deeper understanding of Métis history, traditions, and military service.
The project also provided meaningful opportunities for veterans’ families to gather, honour their relatives, and connect through shared experiences. By combining commemoration, education, and cultural celebration, the event helped preserve Métis veterans’ stories, strengthen community connections, and encourage ongoing learning and remembrance.
